Expert Cedar Thinning at Forest School Walthamstow

5-8 Min Read

Job Date: 28-05-2024

On a rainy day in late May, the Green Canopy team set out to Forest School in Walthamstow with a crucial task ahead: thinning two giant cedar trees. Following a recent spring storm, many branches had snapped and were left hanging dangerously due to the heavy end weight typical of these magnificent trees. Our mission was to remove all dead and fractured limbs and thin the trees to allow better airflow during future storms.

Tackling the Weather Challenge

The weather posed a significant challenge, with persistent rain adding complexity to the job. Despite the adverse conditions, our team, equipped with ropes, a chipper, a pole pruner, and a battery chainsaw, was determined to complete the task safely and efficiently.

Assessing and Addressing the Damage

Upon arrival, we assessed the damage caused by the storm. The dense canopy of the cedar trees, combined with their heavy branches, had resulted in significant breakage. We began by carefully removing the dead and fractured limbs, ensuring that no loose branches posed a risk to the students and staff of Forest School.

As we thinned the trees, we focused on improving their structure to withstand future storms. Thinning not only helps in reducing the wind resistance of the tree but also promotes healthier growth by allowing more light and air to penetrate the canopy. This process is essential for the longevity and stability of large trees, especially as our climate becomes increasingly unpredictable.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance

Working in the rain required extra caution, but our experienced team was well-prepared. We used specialised equipment to ensure the job was done correctly and safely. The ropes and pole pruner allowed us to reach high branches without causing additional damage to the trees or putting ourselves at risk.

This job highlighted the importance of regular tree maintenance and monitoring, particularly for significant trees like these cedars. Regular inspections and upkeep are crucial in preventing severe damage and ensuring the trees remain healthy and safe for years to come. As climate change continues to bring more frequent and intense storms, proactive tree care becomes even more critical.

Here are some snapshots from the day:

Despite the rain, our efforts at Forest School Walthamstow were a success. The cedar trees are now safer, healthier, and better prepared to face future storms. Regular maintenance is vital for trees like these, and our team is always ready to provide expert care to keep them in top condition.
