Reviving the Hornbeam: Sustainable Tree Care at Oaklands College

5-8 Min Read

On the 17th of May 2024, our Green Canopy team embarked on a vital mission at Oaklands College, Welwyn Garden City. Tasked with revitalising a valuable hornbeam tree suffering from recent extreme weather, our goal was clear: remove deadwood and foster resilience.

The Challenge and Our Response:

As we set up our equipment, including a trusty wood chipper, the sun was our ally, casting perfect light for the task. The hornbeam, though robust in structure, showed signs of distress, with branches dying back, a clear victim of climate fluctuations.

Our approach was straightforward yet effective. We carefully removed the deadwood, which not only cleared the tree’s structure but also prevented any potential hazards. The removed wood didn’t go to waste, as we transformed it into wood chips. These were then strategically placed around the tree’s base, a natural method to help retain moisture during upcoming dry spells—a simple, sustainable practice proving its worth time and again.

Lessons Learned and Looking Ahead:

This job, like many others, reinforced a valuable lesson: proactive and preventive tree care can indeed restore health and vitality. Each successful job adds to our repository of knowledge, ensuring that every subsequent task is informed by past experiences.

Today, the hornbeam stands healthier, prepared to face the elements with renewed vigour, a testament to thoughtful, effective arboriculture.

Stay tuned for more stories from the road as we continue to care for trees, learning and adapting with each challenge.
